A Lunch & Learn Program with Veronica Tom, PhD

Dr. Veronica Tom is a Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy and the Marion Murray Spinal Cord Research Center at Drexel University in the College of Medicine. Dr. Tom completed her BS in Neural Science at New York University and her PhD in Neurosciences at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Tom’s current research interests are axon regeneration and plasticity after spinal cord injury. The overall goals of the projects within her lab are to understand acute and long-term sequelae of spinal cord injury and to build upon these findings to identify therapeutic targets that will ultimately help restore function in people living with spinal cord injury. To help achieve these objectives, Dr. Tom and her research team conduct mechanistic and preclinical studies to identify: 1) strategies to promote functional regeneration/plasticity of axons after injury; 2) factors that drive maladaptive plasticity after injury; 3) whole body consequences of maladaptive plasticity. These studies range from cell biology experiments using cultured adult primary neurons, to in vivo experiments that examine a variety of functions in rodents with spinal cord injury. The lab research focuses on promoting recovery of motor, sensory, and autonomic function, a vastly understudied priority of injured individuals. Dr. Tom’s ongoing projects have been continuously funded by multiple agencies, including the NIH, the Department of Defense, and the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation.
